Why subscribe?

Because you’ve asked me to recommend a movie/TV show to you or maybe to pull a tarot card for you. Maybe you like reading feminist analysis of your favorite movies/movie characters. Have you ever desperately wanted to recreate the midnight margaritas scene from the 1998 film Practical Magic? Do you feel seen by every angry, independent woman Laura Dern has played in film and on TV? Have you ever cursed Mercury Retrograde but not actually understood what that means? Are you angry every single day that Nancy Meyers has never gotten the same respect as a filmmaker as her male peers?

These are all great reasons to subscribe.

I also hope to make you laugh, empower you, and help you view the universe and your favorite (or soon-to-be favorite) movies/TV shows with new clarity and perspective.

Didn’t you have a newsletter before?

Yes, I had a TinyLetter. Before that, I had a blog. Before that, I had a Xanga in high school. This will still be relatively personal but focus more on subjects I’m interested in and stuff you already like reading from me.

Also, there will be significantly less Coldplay lyrics here than my high school Xanga, but I will not apologize for the amount of emotional labor Coldplay did for me throughout high school and college.

Do I have to pay to read your work?

The majority of what I write here will be free, because I don’t think you have to or should incentivize everything you do for fun out of capitalistic obligation. That’s what this is to me—a fun outlet for me to write freely for myself and you without jumping through the normal publication hoops. I already have several outlets I write for semi-regularly that pay me to provide specific content. I want to be able to write what I want separate from that.

For now, the only extra content you’ll receive with a paid subscription is monthly tarot card readings. That’s mostly because these require more time and labor than me just sitting down at my laptop and firing off 1,500 words about the importance of the Mamma Mia cinematic universe.

I do believe people should be paid fairly for their time, labor, and skills, so if you feel like throwing a few dollars my way each month to read my work, I won’t say no. But just know you’ll always get to hear my thoughts about Cher’s rendition of “Fernando” absolutely free at every possible opportunity.

Okay that’s it. Thanks for reading and subscribing!
